Placement of a Called Tile (Article ID 5)

< All Topics

Abstract: Although it is not a rule, it is preferred that a called tile be placed on the flat part of the rack and not in the rack with concealed tiles. This way, players can be sure that the correct tile was picked up from the table and used for their exposure.

Question from a player: Where should I put a tile after I call for it?

Answer from the NMJL: The NMJL, recommends that a called tile, whether being called for an exposure or for Mah Jongg, be placed in the top portion of the rack along with the player’s other tiles. This practice decreases the probability of being called for a “misnamed tile.” In addition an incorrect tile being picked up and “racked” would now become impossible.

Other answers from the NMJL:

When exposing, it is preferable to place the called tile on top of your rack before taking the tiles in your rack to make the exposure.
